TUI NA — A TRADITIONAL CHINESE VETERINARY MEDICINE TREATMENT MODALITY RELATED TO MASSAGE THERAPY AND CHIROPRACTIC MANIPULATION — IS VERY EFFECTIVE FOR TREATING PAINFUL MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS SUCH AS ARTHRITIS AND OTHER ORTHOPEDIC CONDITIONS OR HELPING A PET RECOVER AFTER SURGERY.
It is also useful in conjunction with Acupuncture, Herbal therapies and Food therapy as a complimentary treatment modality for Internal Medicine issues. Tui means “to push,” and Na means “to lift or squeeze,” which is a pretty good description of what a Tui Na looks like.
During a Tui Na therapy treatment, I may rub, press, roll, or knead the areas on your pet’s body that are along the meridians or Ashi points, in an effort to get the energy moving freely along the meridians and throughout the body. Where there is free flow of Qi (energy) there is no pain. At times I also stretch the patient and / or stimulate acupressure points within the body.
A safe treatment and preventative modality, Tui Na has no known side effects, but does have similar contraindications as Acupuncture (i.e. Pregnancy, directly at tumor sites in cancer patients and at bone fracture sites). In addition to treating musculoskeletal conditions, and enhancing the effectiveness of other modalities (such as acupuncture or herbal remedies) Tui Na is useful as preventative medicine, as it promotes balance in the pet’s body. It’s especially useful with pets who will not allow me to insert needles for acupuncture.
Pet parents like to watch their pet receiving a Tui Na in the clinic and are encouraged to replicate this soothing, healing technique at home.
