Dr. Helen Tuzio, our resident certified feline specialist, is thrilled to be joining the team at the Advanced Animal Care Center and we were just as excited to have Dr. Tuzio spend some time with us. Read her full bio on our staff page. In anticipation of her joining our team, we sat down to ask her a few questions:
What are the top things you learned from our beloved Dr. Selmer?
As an acupuncture Intern, I was able to see the art of Integrative Medicine in its richest form. I have always believed that the body responded as a whole to our environment and emotions. It has been exciting to see these beliefs put into practice for the betterment of our patients.
The unique ‘zen’ atmosphere at AACC allows us to better know and understand our patients so we can treat the source of their discomfort and work together with their caretakers to keep them healthy and ‘balanced’.
What changes would you like to see made in the veterinary industry?
I would love to see more veterinarians treat the patient as a ‘whole’. This is the basis of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. In today’s world, it is too easy to become focused on one organ that is misbehaving, and to overlook the imbalance that is caused in the rest of the body as a result.
I’d also like more veterinarians to have an open mind about the variety of treatment modalities available. Everything from environmental change to diet can help improve our patients’ lives.
Of course, I’d like also to see the same open mindedness on behalf of the pet caretakers, but it is our responsibility as veterinarians to educate them and to offer them all possible means of treatment. This is the essence of an Integrative Practice such as AACC.
Dr. Tuzio, what are your future goals?
My goals have always been to practice veterinary medicine to the best of my ability, to continually learn throughout my career, to spread knowledge to my patients’ caretakers as well as to newer members of my profession, and to enjoy the process. =^..^=
