I know that this topic isn’t typically found on a veterinarian’s website, but who you choose as a veterinarian will play a large role in your pet’s medical care.
So, how do you choose the ABSOLUTE BEST veterinarian for you?
First, you need to assess your veterinary “wish list.” Here are a few items that pet parents typically consider first, along with questions that reveal their focus:
- Location / Convenience — “Where are you located?”
- Cost — “How much do you charge for an appointment?”
- Holistic Approach — “Are you open to or do you perform more holistic modalities such as acupuncture or herbal remedies?”
- Appointment Scheduling — “Are your appointments running on time?”
You may also want to consider how long the veterinarian spends with your pet, the veterinarian’s “bed-side manner,” the staff of the veterinary clinic, and more.
But the KEY factor you should consider when you choose a veterinarian is whether or not you TRUST them to be part of your pet’s medical team.
- Do you trust their medical expertise?
- Do you trust their intentions?
- And do you trust their integrity?
These are huge considerations, and it’s why I offer extended first exam appointments with new patients. I want to not only be able to give a thorough exam, but I also want time to speak with and get to know the pet parent. (After all, you ARE the home-based, full time nursing staff to any sick patients!)
My goal is always to EARN my client’s trust, rather than simply rely on my framed medical degree on the wall to speak for me. The truth is, as an “animal doctor,” I am still only 1/3rd of the health care team for your pet. YOU — the pet parent— and your pet are the other 2/3rds.
Of course, after every physical examination, I always present — as is my duty — an ideal health care plan for the pet parent to consider. I assess and recommend.
But it’s the pet parent chooses the best option for them at that time.
You’re in control. That’s why it’s imperative that you’re working with a veterinarian you trust to properly care for your pet.
